Implanting Rich Autobiographical False Memories: How Salomon Maimon's philosophy may clarify this problem?
Episodic memories constitute a fundamental human characteristic; one’s identity is basically constructed as a consequence of one’s experiences − my story is who I am. The main problem with implanting "rich autobiographical false memories" (RAF-memories) is the ability of one’s story to contain a new detail in its past, particularly when the detail is very bizarre and is not in keeping with other details − in a fundamental way. From a purely philosophical perspective, the main questions can be formulated as follows: What kinds of relationships exist between (a) the "arrow of time" (b) causality (c) what we know (d) truth and (e) continuity of the self. However, from a philosophical-psychological point of view, we should try to comprehend how one's autobiographical self can change in such a radical way, and yet the person remains the same as before. A broader formulation of the question would be: What are the implications regarding the sense of self? Adopting Salomon Maimon's (a Jewish philosopher who lived between 1753-1800) basic principles we may succeed in explaining − from a philosophical point of view, as well as from a philosophical-psychological point of view − the implanting of "rich autobiographical false memories".

Maimon undermines the significance of the thing-in-itself, emphasizing cognition as a creative power, maintained by strict logical reasoning. Adopting Maimon's main principles such as: (a) human cognition which is identical only in schematic features to the infinite mind, (b) imagination as a cognitive tool which enables the deception of cognition (c) truth rooted in logical symbols, (d) cause and effect are mutually determined (once the subject accepts an outcome, he must create a cause in conjunction with it), and (e) sense of self as purely an idea, but, at the same time, a real predicate (since its nature prevents it from being determined by anything except itself), may well explain implanting rich autobiographical false memories from a philosophical point of view, as well as from a philosophical-psychological point of view.
